The ABC News story was a first hand account with direct quotes. Maybe it was inaccurate. I've seen the same thing reported elsewhere, so it seems unlikely to me, but sure, news reports can be wrong. But given that it is a first hand account from a reporter, I wouldn't say that it is hearsay.
