It's pretty nice to live downtown all-things-considered, but the taxes
will kill ya. The trick is to rent a car, or buy a car share, and
then be very planful: make a list of all the stuff you need and have
weekend trips and monthend trips. Foodwise, only buy your fresh
produce in town and use the internet and you can get by without
getting caught by the tax.

We used to rent a studio in Streeterville (and for the last 3 years
might as well have as we had a hotel room downtown in the same
location). Basically we used the above techniques, shopping at the
local Fox and Obel every few days for organics (some treats snuck in
there too - discipline!).

Chicago is great town, but having had a place both downtown and in
Wilmette I'd definitely prefer downtown to the 'burbs. If in doubt,
try both: it's surprisingly easy (or not) to rent houses in the 'burbs
and apartments downtow
