I switched to webmail years ago and never looked back. I know that's not a huge help except to point out that you may want to look at non-Outlook alternatives. I don't love Apple's Mail program either, but the browser/GMail combo is really easy to use. Also - in several browsers you can "pin" certain website tabs as applications and they never close. You can also (in Chrome, which I use) set them up to start when the browser starts. I have Facebook, GMail and a few other application tabs pinned and added as startup items.
