I know nothing about the syndrome or its causes really, but aren't we talking about a flu vaccine? Unless there are really excellent reasons to worry about dying of pneumonia, this strikes me as a case where even mistaken fears may outweigh the benefit just based on peace of mind.
One the one hand, the risk is being kinda sick for a few days. Maybe a 30% chance of that. On the other, it's paralysis, say odds of 5%, just because of the the prior paralysis, even if you're completely certain it was idiopathic. Even if you think the odds approach zero, most people would prefer to avoid the most miniscule chance of this happening to them, and would worry at least a little if they thought it might. I'd risk the flu.
