Bruce- I've lived in Ga nearly all my life, but mostly in and around Atlanta. I haven't spent a ton of time in the Columbus, which is where Ft Benning is. Atlanta's about 2 hours away, and I could give you a huge list of nightlife and other fun things to do here, if/when you visit "the big city". That's an email or five all to itself.
You'll be about an hour away from the town of Pine Mountain and Callaway Gardens (www.callawaygardens.com), which is a great family vacation spot and has some cool stuff to do. I'd also highly recommend checking out the Savannah area (about 4.5 hours from you). There is a ton of historical stuff there - you could spend many weekends exploring and not see everything. Just outside of Savannah is also Tybee Island, which is a pretty chill and very casual beach island. On the long island hopping, marsh traversing road to Tybee is the Civil War era Fort Pulaski (http://www.nps.gov/fopu). It's partially restored, with all the underground ammo bunkers intact and lots of damage still visible from it's last siege. I always stop by there on my way out to Tybee - I find it a very interesting thing to see. They fire a cannon a few times a day on weekends too, in uniform, using the proper era procedure, explaining it the whole way through - which is kinda cool to see. There is also a bunch of cool things up in the North GA mountains to see. Like Erika says, I am kinda a city boy now, but I have spent plenty of time up in the mountains. Lots of good Appalachian trail day hikes or overnights. The tourist town of Helen, GA is worth looking into, and they also have lazy river tubing in the summertime. There are also various lakes around for boating and such. Lake Lanier is closest to Atlanta, but I'll bet there is one more convenient to Columbus than that. You will also be about 4 hours from the Florida panhandle, which has some fun spots. Panama City, Destin, Seaside (where the movie The Truman Show was filmed). I'm not terribly into NASCAR, though Turner here in Atlanta does run all the NASCAR online stuff, so I am "one and a half degree of separation" connected to all that. That's all I got for now... -Cameron On Fri, Jan 13, 2012 at 11:52 AM, Bruce Sorge <[email protected]> wrote: > So in December my fiancee and I will be moving to Fort Benning, Ga., which > is near Columbus.
