I was born and raised in Georgia, in the part south of Atlanta and
about an hour north of Fort Benning. Columbus, the closest town to
Benning, was a true military town at one point, but not so much any
more. But you can find anything you would need there in terms of
shopping, movies, etc. It's on a large river with a couple of huge
lakes nearby, so there is plenty of boating, fishing and camping. A
couple of hours from Atlanta and all the stuff there - concerts,
museums, etc. A few hours from the Gulf Coast of Florida, with all
the standard ocean side stuff. Roughly an hour to the NASCAR track at
Atlanta Motor Speedway (which is in Hampton, GA, not Atlanta).

Tons of civil war history, and early American too if you want to
travel across the state to Savannah. Also, the settlement towns of
the early Cherokee and Yamacraw Indian tribes were in the Columbus
area if you are interested in Native history.

Politically, Columbus is a bit blue, but the rural areas around it are
about as red as you can get.

Lots of good info about the state here:
