I haven't seen the preso Larry mentioned, but there are some great ones out there. I'd take a look at the suite of products that Amazon offers beyond just "a server in cyberspace".
http://aws.amazon.com/products/ Also - it's worth mentioning that AWS's EC2 (the virtual server product) has a FREE level for both Linux and (recently) Windows servers. The free level is a pretty small instance size so I wouldn't count on actually hosting too much serious stuff on it, but it's a great way to get your feet wet learning how it all works. Most of AWS is pay as you go kinda stuff, measured by hours used, IO, or bandwidth/storage space. It's pretty cheap to play with if you are just messing around, testing, etc. Like less than a dollar a day kinda cheap if you are just running an instance a few hours to test and play with it and shutting it down when you are done with it. Longer term hosting tends to add more costs, and Amazon has a calculator to help you figure out how much it would be. Don't worry too much about that at first though - just get in there and play, it's only going to be a few dollars. Just remember to shut the instance down when you are done with it so you aren't paying for it when you aren't using it. You can even spin up the equivalent of a HUGE multiprocessor machine with gobs of RAM for an hour or two for testing and then shut it down, only paying for the few hours you used it. It's kinda fantastic that way. I've found it to be pretty cool once you figure everything out with terminology and how it all works, which does take a bit of reading to really understand (or maybe Larry's preso is enough). There are lots of services you can layer on top of AWS too. I even have an iPhone app that will let me start/stop/restart instances from my phone. -Cameron On Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 7:39 AM, Scott Raley <[email protected]> wrote: > What is AWS ?
