Um... so it's OK if WE(the US) have weapons of mass destruction?  Because
certainly we can be trusted not to act in our own self interest...

Well, yes.

You don't seem to remember - Iraq started a war by invading a neighboring
country.

The reason for the weapons inspectors in Iraq was part of the settlement
agreement to end the war.

(Basically to stop bombing the crap out of them.)

The war was the entire rest of the UN against Iraq.

That is very different from a voluntary weapons inspection agreement between
the US and the UN.

And considering the historical treatment of the US by the UN (read the
entire 1970's), I can see why the U.S. Government is a bit reluctant to cede
sovereign rights to that often-hostile body.

Plus, it really ticked off the French, which is always a "Good Thing"TM.
