When a discussion changes in content, the subject for that discussion should
change as well. This makes it easier for people to read along.
Yes, I know that a new subject that is a continuation of an old one will be
seen by the archives as being of the same thread as the old one, but that
will change. Currently, a reply to a post will be seen as a child of that
post even if the subject changes. This results in long threads that fork a
number of times. I'm going to change that for the archives.
Basically, a thread will be a collection of parents and children who all
have the same subject. As soon as the subject changes, it becomes a new
thread. A marker will be kept to indicate the parent thread of the new
'family', but it will be shown as its own entity. This will be a bit
confusing for those trying to trace a message back to its root when the
subject has changed many times, but will be easier on someone just trying to
read a single group of messages.
This will make things easier on the system when it comes to generating the
display of a thread. Showing 300 messages at once in a tree format takes
time and power, even just to generate a cached version. If the thread was 50
messages or so, it'll be a whole lot easier.
The bottom line is, please change the subject when you fork. :)
(yes Ben, that's a free one. Have fun)
