For the books blame it on the publishers. Amazon used its size to get
a good deal from the publishers, and so the books are a bit cheaper
for the kindle. When Apple and others got into the game, the
publishers decided they wanted to use the Agency model. Right now the
DOJ is investigating the publishing industry, Apple and a few others
for  collusion to set up a monopoly.
