Both the Republican and Democratic offices confirm that they received usb drives. They have been taken by the Secret Service and the Democrats say they never plugged it in and looked at it because they presumed it was a hoax and were worried about viruses it might have. Good thought on their part.
So at least part of the story is true. But we obviously have no way of knowing what was on the usb keys. This would be a pretty elaborate hoax but, then again, it would be even more fascinating if it were actually true.
