Well, now that's the trick, isn't it?  ;)

Don't download and run stuff when you don't know what it is.  If you do want
to run it anyway, make sure your virus scanner is up to date and then scan
the file you want to open before you open it .. and only then proceed at
your own risk.  Common sense is the first line of defense. :)
