Realistically speaking, if you believe that we have reached peak oil (or
will soon), these sorts of decisions are somewhat inevitable in the longer
run. Shipping parts all over the globe to be manufactured and assembled in
various locations gets more and more expensive as the costs to transport
them goes up. Combine this with other factors such as increasing labor
costs in China and other parts of the world and there is a point where
making things at home make sense again.

Economically speaking, if you believe in the market economy, market forces
and scarcity of resources will flatten certain things like this out, given
enough time.
