Late entry to the fray, so I'll enter at my own risk (since things look like
they've gotten frisky!)

I am the father of 3 kids, 2 girls and 1 boy, oldest is 16. I've had to
deal with all of these issues and will have to continue to deal with all of
these issues. They will have to deal with these issues just as our parents
had to deal with these issues (Rolling Stones, Honky Tonk; Aerosmith,
Pandora's Box to name a few with fairly obscene lyrics that I still like
today that Mom never liked)

"Artists" actions are completely out of my control. Therefore I refuse to
abdicate my responsibility to a third party. Further, part of the negatives
of free speech is that we must let those that choose to be rude, crude and
even despicable express themselves (what if someone doesn't like what I say,
do). Therefore, I really can't support censorship.

As a parent while I can't keep them from the crap, I can and hopefully have
instilled in them a sense of right, wrong, good and bad. This evolves
building up their self esteem so they can say no and speak their mind. It
also involves listening to their music, their listening to mine, discussing
in grown-up terms why I don't like certain lyrics and asking them why they
like the lyrics. Etc.

We shouldn't grow a thicker skin, we shouldn't believe the I'm OK, your OK
bullshit. We should take responsibility for what we read, listen to and
say. We should choose not to associate with those people who violate those
key tenets that we hold dear. We should hold our children to the same
responsibility.

This is not a government function. It is my job.

That's all. Good night.

Andy

It's vapid if I provide a good defense and you counter with the same straw
man I've already tore down. That's pure vapidness. If you don't like being
confronted with the truth, grow a thicker skin. To place the blame on
parents is pure bullshit. Even the best parents can't keep this crap from
kids and it's intellectually dishonest to pretend otherwise.
