When my dad was still alive and fighting cancer, we decided not to shelter
out children from what was going on (the boys were 11 and 7 at the time).
We had very honest and frank discussions with them about what BePa (that is
what they called my dad) was going through and the possible outcomes. As a
result, when he decided to stop chemo therapy and enter hospice, they were
more emotionally prepared for it than my 37 year old sister (who was kind
of shielded from it all by my mother).

People tend to not give kids enough credit when it comes to issues adults
are uncomfortable dealing with.
