I lost my copies of the Histories of Middle Earth, or rather they were taken. But Tolkien has a stunning vision. Think of all the legends of Europe, Britain and Scandinavia as imagined by one man. Then he goes beyond it with all these stories. Then he turns around and does something as wonderful as The Adventures of Tom Bombadil which really must be spoken aloud with a 4 or 5 year old listening.
