That is incredibly cruel. As for the latest excuse - fetal pain at 20 weeks, simply not possible. The the fetus may have a brain but at 20 weeks there is no perception period. There are few i f any thalamacortical connections - those don't come in for another month, so no pain. The brain itself is just a suspension of cells - the synapses are still growing and connecting. At 20 weeks the nerve fibers are not even developed enough to transmit a pain signal. Pain requires a conscious recognition or awareness of a noxious stimulus. Neither withdrawal reflexes nor hormonal stress responses to invasive procedures prove the existence of fetal pain. This is because these same responses can be elicited by nonpainful means and occur without conscious cortical processing. Awareness of pain requires functional thalamocortical connections. These fibers begin appearing between 23 to 30 weeksÂ’ gestational age at the earlieet.
