There was suspicion that Assad used chemical weapons earlier but it had not been confirmed yet. If that is true, then this is continuing a pattern of behavior. Beyond that...I don't know. I do know that Assad has not shown himself to be a rational man, so any argument starting from the point that he would make choices from a point of rational thought start with a false premise and should be treated with extreme caution.
Could it be anti-Assad forces using chemical weapons against themselves to provoke the US to action? A sort of Gulf of Tonkin redux? I suppose it could be. Trying to apply rational analysis to that side of the equation seems to suffer the same problems as trying to figure out what Assad would/would not do. Hopefully the Obama admin is being careful with it's intelligence vetting before making public proclamations. They have seemed much more careful, overall, than the Bush admin, but who knows. The thing about that article that really nauseated me was the "if it's chemical weapons, so what?" attitude. Really? We are really ready to say no big whoop to chemical weapons usage now? I thought we had a fairly broad based agreement that that was a major line in the sand. I, for one, want to keep it that way and I can't really listen to any other arguments from a dude who just doesn't seem to give a shit if Assad is using sarin on his own people.
