Here in FL our minimum wage is $7.79/hr at the moment. Assuming no
Federal tax withholding with just social security and medicare taken
out, someone on minimum wage here working full time takes home $287.79
per week which averages out to $1246.96 per month.

In the video they estimated "about $1300 a month" is what the caller
was taking in benefits, so the numbers are close but still "about" $50
more than what a minimum wage earner would bring home full time (and
that's assuming enough exemptions to not have to pay Federal income
taxes; we have no State income tax in Florida to factor in which
simplifies it further for this example).

>From the supposed caller's point of view she could get up and go to
work 40+ hours per week, likely at more than one part-time job to get
the hours which means juggling schedules, spending less time with her
kids, and having to put forth actual effort to earn that money, plus
she'd have to pay for some sort of child care while she's working.
Or, she could sit on her butt and do nothing and get about the same
amount. In her case maybe it is the rational decision to sit back and
let the welfare checks roll in.

She mentions her husband doesn't work much, so if we assume they can
both work full time minimum wage jobs then we can double the take-home
and say $2493.92 between the two of them. That's way more than what
they are getting in assistance ("about $1300 a month"), so unless
they're truly unable to work, the whole argument she is making falls
apart when applied to both her and her husband vs by herself. For a
single person, especially one with kids, staying on welfare might be
the rational thing to do, but once you have two wage-earners things
start to look a lot better when they're both working, even at minimum
wage.
