In English we don't have gender in our nouns.

In Spanish for instance, most nouns have a gender associated with them,
and the word changes based on that.

Amigo - Male Friend
Amiga - Female Friend

It is commonly accepted that the male version can also encompass both
men and women. At least that was what they told me in class.

I think it is a case of people being to sensitive, I never saw the word
as stressing a man, mostly because in school I was taught that the
meaning of the word changed with context.

Mankind - the human race; includes men and women.

It is not intended to show disrespect, or to lessen women in anyway.

Again just what I was taught in school and while growing up.
