In English we don't have gender in our nouns. In Spanish for instance, most nouns have a gender associated with them, and the word changes based on that.
Amigo - Male Friend Amiga - Female Friend It is commonly accepted that the male version can also encompass both men and women. At least that was what they told me in class. I think it is a case of people being to sensitive, I never saw the word as stressing a man, mostly because in school I was taught that the meaning of the word changed with context. Mankind - the human race; includes men and women. It is not intended to show disrespect, or to lessen women in anyway. Again just what I was taught in school and while growing up. > -----Original Message----- > From: Beth Fleischer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Thursday, June 27, 2002 1:28 PM > To: CF-Community > Subject: Re: RE: Scholars Expect Pledge Ruling Reversal > > > :) Calling someone MailCarrier instead of mail man is nothing about > > respecting the rights of someone. > > > > Its a bunch of cooshy crap that need to come back down to earth, > > some things > > its great for but mostly its just nipp picky idiots. > > > You can't see where calling a female a man isn't in some way offensive? > ______________________________________________________________________ Get the mailserver that powers this list at http://www.coolfusion.com Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists
