I blame that Windows Metro crap. Big blocks of color and a little content. It's probably just a case of "all of the cool kids are doing it".
It's like the web is coming full circle, back to pages that are organized top down in one long column, just without the bookmarks, usually. I find it annoying. In a lot of cases, one actually has to scroll down to see the first bit of meaningful content. I am going to take a look at some of these on my Nexus and see if there is any advantage to the design.
