I think it is actually an acknowledgement by designers that they have no
information architecture skill, and therefore don't know how to break down
a site into digestible chunks that will GET CLICKED ON.

Add to that a misunderstanding of why the NYT interactive piece Snow Fall
was so powerful.

It is oh so much easier to pile everything on a single page, and hope
people read it all, than try to understand why no one is clicking on the
details of a particular product.

I think as a design pattern it is VERY strong when it is maybe 2 scroll
pages long. In cases where that is ALL the information you need about the
company/product, it works well.

When it grows and grows, it loses its luster.

And since it is the sexy new style (where parallax was last year), all the
kids want it. I am watching a couple of friend's sites heading down this
path at the request of the clients.
