There is much merit to this suggestion.  I always wanna hear the
instrument before I buy it.  If cost is a favor almost all music
stores and pawn shops have used instruments, but if you buy one, check
out the electronics to make sure they work before buying.

Also, choosing an amp is important.  I have Fender Bassman 25 that I
use as a practice amp.  Affordable and portable.  But let the ears
decide.
