Looks like 80% are either on the newest version (KitKat) or the previous version (Jellybean). Seems pretty reasonable to me, but maybe it is more of an issue than I know. I know that, in my house, out of the 4 iOs devices, two are ipod touches running version 6 because they are older, an ipad 2 running 7 and an a iphone 4s running 7. One of the ipods replaced a first gen ipod touch running iOs 3, as I recall, because you couldn't update it any higher than that. The two existing touches will probably never get updated to 7 or 8 and I doubt we'll update the iphone to 8 before getting my wife a new phone in the next year or two.
Android definitely has more fragmentation than iOS. I think that is both a good thing and a difficult thing. But, as you mentioned, there is no perfect phone out there.
