Jeff, On a weekend? Ouch. First thing, USE THE METRO. Don't even try to park downtown anywhere near the Smithsonian.
I don't think you can do the entire Smithsonian in one day. One week to 10 days perhaps. Try for 2 museums in one day - the Air and Space and the Museum of Art (West Wing) would be a good starter, especially if you have kids. Those 2 museums are across the mall from each other. Also, if you're carrying a bag, it will be searched. They have really tightened up on security lately. I'd go through the Smithsonian site (http://www.si.edu/) and scout out what you want to see. hth, larry -- Larry C.
