In fact, let me highlight a couple of things you may want to see at the
Smithsonian (I work on 14th and Constitution and know the area intimately).

1) Check out the Quest for Immortality exhibit in the East Wing of the
Gallery of Art. Loads of egyptian artifacts plus a recreation of a
sarcophaghus room.

2) Go to the Natual Science museum and take the kids to see the giant
elephant in the atrium and the dinosaur fossils.

Believe it or not, you could spend an entire day just doing those two
things. There is an authentic turn of the century ice cream parlor in the
bottom floor of the American History museum. They have banana splits that
stand about 12 inches high. My daughter goes nuts when she sees one.

Good luck,

M

Jeff,

On a weekend? Ouch. First thing, USE THE METRO. Don't even try to park
downtown anywhere near the Smithsonian.

I don't think you can do the entire Smithsonian in one day. One week to 10
days perhaps. Try for 2 museums in one day - the Air and Space and the
Museum of Art (West Wing) would be a good starter, especially if you have
kids. Those 2 museums are across the mall from each other.

Also, if you're carrying a bag, it will be searched. They have really
tightened up on security lately.

I'd go through the Smithsonian site (http://www.si.edu/) and scout out what
you want to see.

hth,
larry
