I was told in school (years and years ago <g>) by my English Literature
teacher that it was originally called 1948 - I've always taken that as
rote since then...

I knew it was published in the fourties, but I had always looked at it
as an "alternative view" rather than a "future view" on the government
and opression

That's blown one of my "beliefs" out of the water <g>
