That comes under "Fair Use". Unfortunately, the DMCA and the current press for digital 
rights management does away with a lot of what people use for "Fair Use" now.  Some 
software EULA's prevent you from reporting what you learn about how the software 
performs when you use it.

"First Use" (if I've got the name right) is also under attack.  If you buy a book you 
can sell it when you're done, or give it to someone.  There's a current push, 
especially with software, to prevent you from selling or even giving away software 
after you've used it.
