Terrorism: The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.
According to this definition the guys were terrorists. A lot of crimes could also be called terrorism though. Terrorism is such a catch-all term these days, personally I'd rather not see the term confused further, by calling every other crime terrorism.
