It's very true, the Democrats definitely need a more cohesive position on most issues. Unfortunately, being against a war doesn't help the campaign out much either. The Democrats need to take advantage of this situation and use it to stir up support for their party. I believe a lot of the people sitting on the fence who voted Republican will rethink their decisions in the next election.
I'm not sure that the Republicans had any better solutions to the problems facing our nation, but they did have a very consolidated position on the war which helped them out. It also helps out that the President is riding a high approval rating and campaigned for several candidates.
