I personally use Register.com for my domain registrations,
and while it is a little higher than the El Cheapos, here is
the main reason.

Easy to configure, and reliable DNS servers. over two
years with no problems. Set them up once and forget it.

In comparison, I have a few clients that use Registerfly.
Their good point is that they have a very convenient live
java chat that connects to a live person 24/7 who will
assist with DNS issues. Their bad point, is that every two
weeks or so, their DNS servers get corrupted records, or
something, and seems to lose Zone files. This has the
effect of bringing down either the client's web site and
shopping cart, their mail service, and sometimes both. If
you are their customer, you must check with them often to
make sure their Zone records stay intact. The other bad
point is that while register.com takes 12/24 hours to
propagate to the root servers, Registerfly can take up to
ten days before your pointers all become active. This can
result in lost email, or lost business on your web site.

Another client uses Dotster, and again they have a very
cumbersome and difficult to manage DNS manager, that
produces many errors, and also takes forever to propagate to
the root servers. This client registered 4 domains at one
time, and I host all four. Three of the sites still have
problems although they are working, sort of, and the fourth
site still is not resolving after three weeks.

My experience with Network Solutions is again, difficult to
set up or change the DNS set up.

There are some registrars that will require you to use their
hosting service, or will not allow you to modify DNS
settings for 60 days after registration. Their reasoning is
beyond me.

Therefore, my advice is you get what you pay for, and I am
willing to pay for the reliability I get from register.com.
Especially if your email and web site is mission critical.
