I suppose it would depend on the quality od construction and the type of gun (a revolver may be harder to silence than an automatic). Some of the "silencers" I've seen don't really do much other than "soften" the quality of noise (you get a "thooom" rather than a "CRACK"). But I heard others that do make a dramatic difference (approaching the generic TV "twipt"). (Of course the most common silencer you'll see on the firing range is a set of ear-muffs.) I'm sure you could get pretty damn silent however - but perhaps not economically.
