The controller was large for the time (although more comfortable than
the Xbox controller, I think).

The layout was okay: a d-pad in the upper left, two actions buttons on
the upper right and two system control buttons in the middle.  I would
have prefered at least one more action button.

I honestly can't remember if it had shoulder buttons or not... But I
think not.

The real trick, however, was the full phone pad below - 12 buttons layed
out in a square.  Games shipped with plastic overlays for the controller
that assigned functions to those buttons.  For example a mech game might
overlay the mech on the pad so that pressing the upper right button was
pressing its shoulder (thus firing the shoulder cannon).

It was a cute (and very usable) gimmick, but one that didn't get much
play.
