Brian, Good to hear that there was actually a complaint (in which case I completely agree with your actions).
But, I disagree that there is no way in which slurs can be used in "non-offensive" ways. Many people in targeted groups have "re-appropriated" such terms and use them as a way to empower themselves. Now, that doesn't make it okay for someone outside the target group to use the word. But, some target groups are pretty invisible, and it can be difficult to know if someone is using a word "from within" or "from without." Not that I think I'd go around using slurs in the workplace, in either case. But, if I were in a target group that had reappropriated a word, I certainly wouldn't want anyone telling me that I couldn't use it.
