I read the article and know the source of the comment. I've read it before - 'The Only Band That Matters' runs across the bottom of the 6-foot red and green Clash tour poster I had on my walls all through college.
It's just that it is hard to 'matter' once a band stops being together and members start dying. It's a funny spin on an old saying. They mattered. The band has been gone for quite a number of years now, and can no longer be spoken about properly in the present tense. Other bands that mattered (in some cases, are still mattering along) include the Angelic Upstarts, Cocksparrer, the Cockney Rejects, Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers, Blitz, Oi Palloi, the Rezillos, the Buzzcocks, Wire, the Plasmatics and dozens and dozens of other mid-70's - early-80's UK punk bands. If you enjoyed the Clash, you may find some of these interesting as well. M --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
