yeah you pay for the party.

When I was younger, it was typical for me and my friends to "crash" socials
by buying tickets at the door. And going to a social was certainly one of
the things we discussed when planning our weekend festivities.

Technically socials are a private event but generally people try to sell as
many tickets as possible and can actually make a significant amount of
money. Drink prices used to be controlled and could not be greater than
$1.85 CAD for a drink at a social. So on the weekends it was definitely
cheaper to indulge at a social than at a bar. I think the maximum price has
been raised since they passed a mandatory drink price of $2.25 cad per drink
in the Winnipeg bars.

(Note: The $2.25 minimum drink price was in response someone over consuming
and ending up floating in the river. Before the minimum drink price it was
common place for Winnipeg establishments to have $1 drink specials during
mid week.)

You PAY to go to the party?

It is a different custom. But does that mean anyone who pays can go? I
might spend every weekend paying to go to wedding socials.
