Well I think 2 main things in the article caught my attentions. 1. The need for the US to watch the EU very closely. We all know that right wing fascism has taken root there before with disastrous results. Can you imagine how bad it would be if the new fangled EU military structure that is being built were to be controlled by a resurrected Nazi like movement?
2. The fact that crime in these nations is as bad and even worse than it is in the US, even though you have such tight controls on firearms and other personal defensive and offensive devices. If anything I think we are just receiving another abject lesson in why we need to stay away from socialism, no matter what it's flavor. I would argue that the centre of politics in the UK certainly, and possibly the rest of Europe, has been shifting to the right for the last decade. Blair's New Labour are hardly left wing, and infact in many ways occupy the precise middle right ground that the Conservatives made their own.
