Will, Gotta disagree here. Currently the possession of an illegal firearm is usually not a long sentance. This is now going to become a 5 year mandatory term.
Over here, there were an estimated 9000 gun related incidents in 2002. I think in the late 90s there were around 2000. The increase is directly attributed not only to the import of illegal guns from Eastern Europe, but also to the 'gangsta' culture that is indemic in certain areas of the country. They are now considering arming police in 5 or 6 cities due to the gravity of the situation. You've got to realise that in certain ghettos being armed is part of the culture. You don't go anywhere without a weapon. Thankfully Bath doesn't have that much of a problem. When guns become part of the culture, like having the latest mobile phone, you need to provide a detterant that really does work for those that are just packing a weapon for the sake of it. Thankfully prices are high in this country. You can get a gun for around 400 (about $600).
