Little known fact.  The supreme court ruled (can't remember the exact case, will 
google it later) that the police have no obligation to PROTECT civilians.  Their 
obligation is to investigate crimes AFTER they occur.

So much for not needing a gun.

The last one I remember was Ruby Ridge, so big they made a TV movie out
of it.

True, but a police officer is valuable to the community, his loss may
make it easier for a terrorist act to happen. The cop protects the
streets, the people, the children, etc. The terrorist suspect may not
give any valuable information at all. If I had to choose between the
two, I would take a dead terrorist over a dead police officer any day,
under 99.99% of the circumstances. Only if there is irrefutable proof
that having the terrorist alive would prevent anything, and even then,
it depends on what it prevents.
