Here, for support/prepress customers, we do contracts for x number of hours
for a reduced rate. That guarantees us income (if the hours are not used
within the year, they are lost) while generally giving the customer a good
deal (typically the number of hours in the contract is pretty close to
need).
You might want to do something like
This project will take approximately 300 hours. If you contract with me for
a minimum of, say, 225 hours, I'll give it to you at $65. The $65 rate is
good until the customer accepts the package and signs off that it is
complete. After that, all hourly rates are negotiable.
As far as trashing someone else's work, I would probably avoid speaking in
terms of what they did wrong, but talk a lot about what you can do better.
Mention UI improvements, as well as pointing out Hey, if we made a few
changes in the data we are recording, we could generate reports x and y.
And, if you know there's anything they are specifically unhappy with, point
out ways to improve that specific thing.
Of course, you run the risk of them taking your ideas and handing them to
the other guy, but it seems to me it would be worth the risk. And you can
always do what we do when we think the guy's going to give us the shaft --
we charge for the evaluation, but apply that toward the work to be done.
Kinda like a 'buy this for $10, get $10 towards your next purchase' kinda
thing.

: Subject: Contract to Hire
:
:
: ok so i am going into a meeting today for a contract.
: once completed on time & under budget they want to hire me.
:
: normally i charge 75 bucks an hour for web work.
: should i drop the rate to ensure i get the work?
: they mentioned that i would have to bid out the work, against a
: company who
: originally built this application.
:
: i am sure that company could fix there problems faster & cheaper
: then i can
: starting from scratch.
: since they have the database, which i will have to fake or recreate. stuff
: like that.
:
: any advice?
: meetings at 2pm
:
: thanks
