About a month ago NPR had a story about a tax break for small businesses
that purchase vehicles over 6,000 lbs. The idea was to help small businesses
like plumbers and electricians and dry cleaners buy their vans and trucks.
Turns out that now that some SUVs are topping out at over 6,000 lbs and
qualify for the subsidy lots of self-employed people like consultants,
accountants, basket ladies, Avon reps, Mary Kay reps, etc., are using this
tax break to buy the family SUV. I can't remember which year it was, but the
last year for which they quoted numbers shows that your tax dollars helped
to subsidize the purchase of 100,000 of these vehicles to the tune of $1
billion! Think about that the next time you are sitting at a light
surrounded by these monsters . . .
