Patrick- thanks. check out their web site: www.spiritsinstone.com
Besides a "virtual gallery", it has pages on the stone, the people, the sculpture process, etc. The curators of the sculpture project in the U.S. are Anthony and Laura Ponter. Tony grew up in Zimbabwe, in the NE of the country near the mountains. His father collected the unique sculpture of the Shona in that region. (Looks a lot like Picasso I think, but was not influenced by "Western" art.) The sculptors believe that the spirits of their ancestors guide them to quarry a particular piece of stone and make a particular thing of it. Tony moved to England then the U.S. where he met Laura. They went to Zimbabwe for their honeymoon. He had planned a safari. She became enchanted by the sculpture at Tony's father's home, and said basically "to heck with the safari, I want to go meet these people and learn about them and their art". They set up a project back in the U.S. to support the artists and bring their sculpture here. They have three galleries in the San Francisco Bay Area, and a headquarters/warehouse on a horse ranch in the wine country near Sonoma. Laura has a love for abused or disabled horses, and provides a place for them to live out the remainder of their lives in dignity with love and care. The sculpture warehouse is a horse barn! We receive notification of events at the ranch, which is by invitation only, and the hippo is our 8th piece of their sculpture for ourselves, plus 3 pieces we have given as gifts. This is the only large heavy piece. Six of the others are on the mantel, one is on my desk at work. -Ben > That is a nice sculpture!
