This an mpeg1 file? Purple artifacts sounds a lot like some problems
mpeg4 codecs like xvid have with certain versions. Maybe the hd on the
laptop needs chkdsk /f, and the file got corrupted?

Try running the movie through this program. It can spot some problems,
and tell you a bit about the movie.

If you are using WMP, QT, or Real, I'd recommend a either bsplayer or
zplayer. Both free, have more features, and perform better. No spyware
either.
