Just an update. The problem is fixed - but I have no idea why. How did I
fix it? For the hell of it, I decided to try to open the file in Real.
At first, it didn't work, but when I checked for updates (and installed
the updates) _and_ rebooted, both the laptop and the desktop can now
play the file fine. I never imagined Real would work with it, but I'll
use what works. 

Now I have a cool movie to watch on my way to MX on the Rocks next week.
