Jumped when I was 19 after an all-day course. Loved it. 3/4 of a second after pushing off, I realized that the only thing between me and God was a glorified bed sheet and some strings. I was the first one out of the plane, too, so I had no examples other than ground school walkthroughs. Not only that, but the smart-assed pilot and jumpmaster thought they'd have a little fun with us, and talked real serious-like about maybe not having enough fuel to clear the treeline, but "What the hell-- let's give it a try!" I knew they were BSing, but still...
My first wife's father Bob watched his friend commit suicide by 'chute. Found out afterward, so he had no idea at the time. Landed chest flat in full control spread back with his arms and legs, so he bounced about ten feet off the ground, and Bob was right there so he saw and heard it all. Spontaneously tossed his lunch standing up while his friend was still in trajectory post-bounce. He said it was the sound that did it. Wet-cracking-hard-belch-muddled-thud that he could feel through his boots he was so close. Yeah, I won't be going back up until my little girl tosses her bouquet, and she's only five so it'll be a while.
