Well...there is a game editor for games like Quake III, and others.

It involves 3D skills on the PC, using what amounts to a 3D Modelling
program to build new levels for the game. 
It also involves programming and scripting.

He doesn't seem to be doing that though, simply adjusting standard game
configuration files.

Still, it shows a logical mind and at least a basic undestanding of how
programs work:i.e. the config files alters facets of the game.

I wouldn't get too excited until he starts adjusting weapons stats,
creating new levels, and adjusting the code itself. He will soon find
out that it is useful to know some math, especially as math pertains to
Physics. (Which might actually just require simple algebra anyways). 

I hate math, Got a C in Add Maths twice, but I'm pretty good at
programming and using the puter etc. etc. 
So I don't think it is extremely necessary. What is necessary is to be
able to think logically.
