: Where this stands is that both local colleges have said he is too
: young for
: admission, even non-degree. The woman at UNM also homeschools, and while
: sympathetic pointed out that a lot of freshmen bomb out their first
: semester without being 13 to add to their burdens. She suggested that a
: private IT institute might be an alternative, since failure in a
: certificate program would not go on his permanent college record. Research
: continues. Another idea would be to take the game design/animation classes
: myself.

Where I'm not in a position to comment on the emotional and intellectual
strengths of your kid, I can speak from experience. My parents were
frequently told that I should skip grades. Things like, "Your first grader
reads at a high-school level" and "your second grader is teaching
pre-algebra to his friends" and little stuff like that. However, I'm glad
they didn't skip me ahead because I never would have learned social
interaction as well as I did. I mean, I'm still a little awkward sometimes,
but at least I know it. :-) Anyhow, at 13 I probably could have taken
college-level classes, but would not have been able to interact with people
in their late teens, much less know how to deal with them when the looked
down on me. Again, I'm not trying to speak for your kid, only about my
past, and maybe give you something to think about.

: Tribes itself does not appear to require calculus. However, I know that
: when I was playing a lot of games I eventually always wound up wanting to
: re-write them. So... maybe I will just have to think up a game with
: realistic artillery scenarios. Medieval warefare maybe.

For calculus, try any game requiring accurate throwing or catching. :-)

I got my 13-year old sister hooked on SimCity. She also likes the Sims, but
only because she likes to build them houses. Besides blowing up virtual
enemies, what is your son into? I'm sure that in a group this diverse,
someone can think of (reasonable educational) games to match his interests.
