For what it's worth I had much the same initial reaction - then I started
the first book a few months ago in a fit of boredom - I went through all
four in less than a week.  I'm a fan now.... and I'm honestly not sure why
the books were ever given the label "kids books" at all.

They're really not.  They're ABOUT kids, sure - but the plots are not at all
childlike.  They're much more "Huck Finn" than "Hardy Boys".
