Again, I think your focused on a single religion as your example. What religions
hold sway over the masses? How? Do all religious people vote as a block because
their single religious leader tells them to? Is there a central religious leader
for all religions?

Yes, but the way that a point of view is stated shades the entire conversation.
It's origin is in a dictatoral, anti-religious political movement and its use
brings that movement to mind (or at least what it stood for).
Either way, 'holds sway over the masses' implies that the religion controls
those masses. I have yet to see any religion do that.

Let me put this down for a point of view. I'm religious. It is my choice to be
so. I know all the things I can do if I didn't live by the values and burden
that I carry. I could work on Shabbos. I could eat all the fun food that
everyone else does. I could do more than just seduce women with chocolate. I
could do, be and live so much more. But it would not be me. I'm who I am and
hold by what I hold by because I chose to and because I believe it is right. I
think most everyone else who is religious holds to their religion not because it
holds sway over them, not because they were forced to, but because they feel
that it is the right thing to do.
I know people who are not religious and I can not say that they are any better
than I am. And not being religious is as much their religion as mine is in many
cases.
