Moving away from smoke in most restaurants is logistically impossible. One
thing I don't think that smokers get is that having a smoking section in a
restaurant is like having a peeing section in a pool. Only smoke is harmful
whereas pee generally is not. Even a small amount of smoke can be very
bothersome to those who are sensitive to it, and when you don't smoke or
have quit you can be VERY sensitive to it. Any smoker knows how tobacco
smoke curls around like little snakes that are subject to the slightest
changes in air flow.

As an occasional smoker, I have a slightly different perspective on this
question. There is something I have noticed which could be called the "beat
em or join em" factor, where people are bothered if they don't smoke but are
less bothered if they start smoking. Given the highly physically addictive
nature of tobacco, it seems odd to me that people should be allowed to
subject others to it. I greatly appreciate the vastly expanded choice of
where to it in towns where I don't have to worry about it.

I do agree with the exemption for bars, at least those that don't double as
restaurants. That is a whole different scene.
